Jesus

Posted on 25 Apr 2010 - by james In: Sundays Reflections

Fuse is 2 weeks into a 5 week series about Jesus. So far we have looked at the idea of Jesus as the Savior vs the way Jesus is portrayed in pop culture and then last week Annie discussed if it was possible that Jesus was just a good teacher. It is early Sunday morning as I write so in a few hours Annie will again be speaking, this time on how Jesus was 100% God AND 100% man. From the first Sunday in the series I have started to wonder about something. I mean it is a conversation I have had with peers in the past but it has once again returned to my head during this series.

The topic i simply this: What would we (the Church) do if Jesus came back and lived among us in todays society.

As I ponder this even know I would love to say that we would embrace him and want to spend lots of time with him. While at first this may be true, it would not be long before I think that Jesus would start calling our lives how he saw them. To live a life with Jesus physically present would be one of high accountability and I am not sure we would enjoy that.

Sure Jesus was fun to be around but what would we do when he started teaching things that went against the culture that we lived in, the culture that we grew up in? Is this something that we could accept?

While I know what I think would happen, I am interested in what you think would happen. What are your thoughts?

Thought of a friend in Hell

Posted on 16 Mar 2010 - by james In: Sundays Reflections

After speaking on Sunday about living an evangelistic life and had people think of a friend they knew who could possibly spend eternity in Hell, I started thinking about my own peers.  When all is said and done is the life that I am living one that will allow others to see Christ through me? When all is said and done is the legacy that I have created one that I will be proud of? One that touched lives? One that helped change and shape lives?

As look back over my college years I can honestly say the legacy that was left there is anything but one that helped change and shape lives for the positive. In fact I am pretty sure I did more destruction than construction during some of those years, which is something I am not proud of. The good news for me is that everyday I have get the chance to restart that legacy and try to mend it. While I can’t change the past and the things that I did, I can use the experiences I had to point others to the one who created me and loved me through the experiences. Furthermore I can model the life transformation that has taken place in my life and show that it is possible to move in from hurt/pain into healing.  I once read somewhere “God loves us where we are but refuses to leave us where we are”The encouraging part for me is that I have started to see my lifestyle change be noticed by my college friends who are now starting to ask questions and go on their own journey for what truth is.

Know this however, I am finding it a lot harder to recreate my legacy with old friends than it is to create a new one from scratch with people that I have started to meet since graduating college. If you are going to do something it is better to do it right the first time. God may allow us to have a couple tries at it, but it only gets harder each time around.

Contagious Christianity Week 1 reflections

Posted on 14 Mar 2010 - by james In: Sundays Reflections

So I just finished the first of three talks in the “Contagious Christianity” series leading up to Easter. I will blog more formally about this tomorrow after staff meeting, but I wanted to see if I could start a simple discussion tonight. I want to ask you three questions.

1) What would it look like for you to live an evangelistic life?

2) What thoughts come to your head when you think of your friends, loved one, and peers realizing that Hell exist a little to late.

3) What are you willing to do to make sure that your friends can’t look at you when all is said and done and say “Why did you not tell me?”

After a few of you all answer I will get back on and post my personal thoughts.
